Then, on the other hand, someone who does find an old thread and comments in it is criticized by an over zealous op who thinks just cuz they started a thread, they 'own' it. So many times I've seen someone post a question and they were criticized for not looking for an old thread of a similar nature. There are no rules or even guidelines (other than those YOU personally impose on people) about ressurecting an old post. I understand you want to defend your indignant behavior but there indeed are valid reasons to dig up an old thread.
